Operation Unity Nets 29 Arrests, $12K in Stolen Goods

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) successfully concluded “Operation Unity,” a targeted initiative to combat retail theft, resulting in dozens of arrests and the recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise. The proactive enforcement effort, which ran from October 18th to October 20th, 2023, underscored law enforcement’s commitment to partnering with local businesses to deter crime.

During the three-day operation, undercover deputies collaborated closely with loss prevention teams from various retail stores across Montgomery County. While The Woodlands Mall served as a primary hub for the initiative, deputies also focused on other retail locations throughout the county.

The operation yielded significant results: a total of 29 arrests were made, leading to 45 charges being filed. Among these, 32 were misdemeanor charges and 13 were felonies. Authorities also recovered an estimated $12,028 worth of stolen merchandise. Beyond direct theft arrests, officers served two felony warrants and one misdemeanor warrant during the operation.

The scope of offenses extended beyond basic shoplifting. Arrests included charges for organized retail theft, possession of marijuana, evading arrest, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and prostitution, highlighting the varied criminal activities often associated with retail crime.

Sheriff Rand Henderson emphasized the importance of such proactive measures and collaborative efforts. “These kinds of proactive enforcement efforts, combined with strong partnerships with local businesses, are key to driving down crime rates in the community,” Sheriff Henderson stated, reiterating the Sheriff’s Office dedication to maintaining a safe environment for residents and businesses.

Retail theft, particularly organized retail crime (ORC), has become a growing concern nationwide, impacting businesses’ bottom lines, potentially leading to higher consumer prices, and fostering an environment conducive to other criminal acts. Operations like “Unity” are crucial in disrupting these networks and sending a clear message that such activities will not be tolerated in Montgomery County.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents and business owners to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
