Montgomery Co Court Approves DWI Blitz, Radio, Grants

**Montgomery County Commissioners Green-Light DWI Crackdown, Public Safety Radio Upgrade, and Community Initiatives**

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – The Montgomery County Commissioners Court concluded a productive recent session, approving a series of key projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety, improving emergency communications, and recognizing vital community efforts. Among the most significant decisions were the authorization of a “No-Refusal” DWI enforcement period and a major investment in public safety radio equipment.

**”No-Refusal” DWI Enforcement Set for Mid-June**

To bolster road safety, Commissioners approved an upcoming “No-Refusal” driving while intoxicated (DWI) enforcement period scheduled for **June 14th through 16th, 2024**. During this critical window, individuals suspected of DWI in Montgomery County who refuse a breath or blood test will face swift action, as authorities will be able to quickly obtain warrants for compulsory testing.

This intensified effort is a coordinated initiative, funded by a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). It will involve a broad coalition of local law enforcement agencies, including the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Conroe Police Department, Precinct 1 and 4 Constables, Montgomery Police Department, Shenandoah Police Department, and Willis Police Department. The goal is to deter impaired driving and ensure accountability, making county roads safer for everyone.

“Our commitment to public safety is unwavering, and this ‘No-Refusal’ period is a crucial tool in our efforts to combat impaired driving,” stated a representative from the Commissioners Court. “By working collaboratively with our law enforcement partners and leveraging grants like this one from TxDOT, we send a clear message: driving under the influence will not be tolerated in Montgomery County.”

**Major Investment in Public Safety Communications**

In a significant move to upgrade the county’s emergency communications infrastructure, the Commissioners Court approved a 10-year contract with Motorola for public safety radio equipment and services, totaling **$5,248,349.95**. This substantial investment will be funded through the Emergency Communications District (ECD) fund balance, ensuring that first responders across the county have access to reliable, state-of-the-art communication tools essential for daily operations and emergency response.

The ECD plays a vital role in funding and managing the 9-1-1 system and other critical communications infrastructure, ensuring seamless coordination between various agencies during emergencies. This contract underscores the county’s proactive approach to maintaining cutting-edge technology for its police, fire, and EMS personnel.

**Grants and Community Generosity Boost County Services**

Several grants and donations were also accepted, highlighting both strategic resource acquisition and strong community support:

* The **9-1-1 District** received a **$41,600** grant from the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM) to purchase new furniture for their emergency operations center, enhancing comfort and functionality for personnel during critical incidents.
* Local generosity was also on display with **The Woodlands Cycling Club** donating **$1,000** to **Precinct 5**, which will be used to acquire three new bike racks, supporting outdoor recreation and community amenities.
* **Precinct 4** benefited from the kindness of the **Caney Creek Cowboy Church**, which donated four new tires for a 2018 Ford F-150, valued at **$1,288**, contributing to the maintenance and efficiency of the precinct’s fleet.

These contributions demonstrate the county’s ability to leverage external funding and community partnerships to improve services and infrastructure without solely relying on taxpayer dollars.

**Recognizing Public Health and Child Abuse Prevention**

The Commissioners also took time to acknowledge important public awareness campaigns:

* **April 1st through 7th, 2024**, was officially dedicated as **Public Health Week** in honor of the invaluable work performed by the Montgomery County Public Health District. This recognition aims to raise awareness about the importance of public health initiatives and services that protect and improve community well-being.
* **April** was officially recognized as **Child Abuse Prevention Month**. Commissioners showed their solidarity and support for this critical cause by wearing blue during the session, encouraging residents to learn about prevention, recognize the signs of abuse, and support local efforts to protect children and families.
