Missing kayaker found drowned in Lake Conroe

**Spring Man Found Deceased in Lake Conroe Following Kayaking Accident; Accidental Drowning Suspected**

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – Authorities recovered the body of a Spring man in Lake Conroe on Friday morning, May 31st, after he was reported missing the previous evening. The deceased has been identified as 39-year-old Jonathan David Dearing. While the investigation is ongoing, officials currently believe the incident was an accidental drowning and do not suspect foul play.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) game wardens located Dearing’s body in Lake Conroe, specifically near the Montgomery County line and just south of the FM 1097 bridge. The discovery concluded a search initiated after Dearing’s family reported him missing on Thursday, May 30th.

According to preliminary reports, Dearing had gone out fishing alone in his kayak on Thursday evening. His capsized kayak was later found nearby, prompting concern and the missing person report that evening.

Authorities noted that Dearing was wearing a life jacket at the time he was found, though it was not properly secured. Weather conditions on Lake Conroe that Thursday evening were reportedly quite rough, with strong winds and choppy waters posing significant challenges for boaters. This detail highlights the potential role of adverse weather in the tragedy.

Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Wayne Mack has ordered an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Homicide/Violent Crimes Unit, along with the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constables, are actively investigating the incident.

“Our hearts go out to Mr. Dearing’s family during this difficult time,” said Captain Robert Smith, a TPWD Game Warden. “This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of open waters, especially during adverse weather. We always urge boaters, even experienced ones, to check weather forecasts, ensure life jackets are properly fitted and secured, and consider boating with a companion.”

A spokesperson for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that all evidence gathered thus far points to an an accidental drowning. “At this stage of the investigation, there is no indication of foul play,” stated Lt. Scott Perry with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. “Our unit, in conjunction with Precinct 1 Constables, is working diligently to piece together the full circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.”

Lake Conroe is a popular destination for fishing and recreational boating, attracting thousands of visitors annually. However, local officials frequently emphasize the importance of water safety, particularly as weather conditions can change rapidly on large bodies of water.
