Abbott Recalls Similac 360 Total Care for Contamination

**Abbott Issues Precautionary Recall for Similac 360 Total Care Infant Formula Amid *Cronobacter* Concerns**

**[CITY, STATE] – May 14, 2024** – Abbott Laboratories, a leading manufacturer of infant formula, today announced a voluntary recall for specific batches of its Similac 360 Total Care Infant Formula. The precautionary measure comes amidst concerns over potential contamination with *Cronobacter sakazakii*, a bacterium that can cause severe infections in infants.

The recall, announced this afternoon, applies specifically to 20-ounce containers of Similac 360 Total Care with lot codes **22340RH** and **22340RH1**. These affected products were manufactured at Abbott’s facility in Sturgis, Michigan, and have been distributed across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

*Cronobacter sakazakii* infections, while rare, can be life-threatening for infants, especially newborns, premature babies, or those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, poor feeding, excessive crying, or very low energy. In severe cases, it can lead to sepsis or meningitis. Parents and caregivers who notice any of these symptoms in their infant after consuming the formula should seek immediate medical attention.

“The safety of infants is our top priority,” stated an Abbott spokesperson in a press release. “This recall is a precautionary measure, and we are working closely with health authorities to ensure that consumers have the information and support they need.”

Consumers are strongly advised to check the lot code printed on the bottom of any Similac 360 Total Care containers they may possess. If the code matches either **22340RH** or **22340RH1**, the product should not be used. Abbott recommends immediately discarding the affected formula and contacting the company for a refund or replacement.

This latest recall comes as Abbott continues to navigate intense scrutiny regarding its infant formula production. The company faced widespread criticism and a significant formula shortage following a similar *Cronobacter* recall and subsequent shutdown of its Sturgis plant in early 2022. That incident highlighted vulnerabilities in the infant formula supply chain and prompted federal investigations and reforms.

Parents and caregivers can contact Abbott directly for more information, refunds, or replacements by calling their customer service line at 1-800-986-8540 or by visiting their website: www.similac.com/recall. For general information about *Cronobacter* infection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides resources on its website: www.cdc.gov/cronobacter.

If you have used the recalled formula and are concerned about your infant’s health, please contact your pediatrician for guidance.
