Fatal Head-On Crash Kills Driver, Injures Deputy

Magnolia, Texas – A tragic head-on collision early Friday morning on FM 1488 in the Magnolia area claimed the life of one man and seriously injured a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The incident, which occurred around 2:00 AM on February 23, 2024, is currently under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Authorities report that Scott Jaynes, driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck, was traveling westbound on FM 1488 near Mostyn Drive when, for reasons still being investigated, his vehicle reportedly crossed the center line. Jaynes’ truck then collided head-on with an eastbound Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle driven by Deputy J. Robles.

Scott Jaynes was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the impact. Deputy Robles sustained serious but stable injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Deputy Robles has since been discharged and is recovering.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation to determine the precise circumstances that led to the collision. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is fully cooperating with DPS investigators.

Sheriff Rand Henderson released a statement expressing profound sorrow following the incident. “Our department extends its deepest condolences to the family of Scott Jaynes during this incredibly difficult time,” Sheriff Henderson said. He also acknowledged the dangerous nature of law enforcement work and the resilience of his deputies.

Further details regarding the investigation will be released as they become available from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
