Montgomery Co. Prescription Drug Take Back Day – April 27

**Montgomery County Residents Urged to Participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day This Saturday**

**MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX –** Residents across Montgomery County have a crucial opportunity this Saturday, April 27th, to safely dispose of unwanted or expired prescription medications, as local authorities join the nationwide effort for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event, organized by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), aims to combat drug misuse, prevent accidental poisonings, and protect the local environment.

From 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, several collection sites will be open throughout the county, offering a free, anonymous, and convenient way to clear medicine cabinets of potentially harmful substances.

“This initiative is vital for the health and safety of our Montgomery County communities,” said Sheriff Rand Henderson. “Improper disposal of medications, whether flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, poses significant risks. It can contaminate our water supply and also make these drugs accessible to individuals who might misuse them or to curious children who could be accidentally poisoned. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this safe and responsible option.”

The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a critical public health and safety issue. According to the DEA, most misused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, often directly from the home medicine cabinet. Events like these provide a secure method for preventing such diversion. Nationally, these events have collected millions of pounds of medications, significantly reducing the amount of unused drugs in homes.

Accepted items include prescription pills, patches, and liquids. Vape pens are also accepted, provided the batteries are removed beforehand. It’s important to note that certain items cannot be collected due to safety protocols. These include needles or other sharps, inhalers, aerosol cans, mercury thermometers, and, of course, any illicit drugs. Sharps, for instance, are biohazards and require specialized disposal not handled at these events.

No questions will be asked at the collection sites, ensuring privacy and encouraging participation.

Residents can drop off their medications at the following locations this Saturday, April 27th, between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM:
